Feather Care

Ostrich and peacock feathers tend to "dry out" over a period of time and lose both their "fluffiness" and looks.

To restore feathers to a fuller appearance it is recommended that you shake and steam them to bring back a more attractive look.

To do this, gently rub the feather between your hands to make the individual strands more fluffy.  Then get a pan of boiling water or a steam kettle and hold the feather in the steam that is given off.  This process puts moisture back into the flue and "expands" the appearance of the feather.

If needed, wash them gently in warm, soapy water and dry on a clothes line. Once dry, steam them to "fluff" out. Never dry them in a dryer or oven.

Welcome,

Thank you for visiting Ostrich Eggs and More. We thought you might enjoy a few interesting facts.

The Remarkable Ostrich

  1. The Ostrich is a member of the ‘Ratite” family of birds. The males are called roosters and females are called hens.

  2. Ostrich have been raised commerciallly in South Africa for over 150 years. The three main products are meat, feathers, and hide.

  3. There are three main species of Ostrich, only one of which (the African Black), is found in captivity.

  4. Ostriches are true dinosaurs.  There skeletons and fossils have been found dating back over 120 million years.

  5. The Ostrich produces the strongest commercially available leather in the world and some of the most beautiful feathers.

  6. Ostriches are not an endangered species.  There are at least 2 million worldwide.

  7. A fully grown Ostrich has one of the most advanced immune systems known to mankind.

  8. Ostriches are the fastest two legged animal in the world and can run at 45 miles per hour (70 km. per hour) and can maintain that

      speed for approximately 30 minutes.

  9. The Ostrich does not bury its head in the sand. An ostrich scratches out a wide nest in the sand about 5 to 6 feet across and 2 feet

deep. The ostrich turns its eggs several times a day so from a distance it looks like he has his head in the sand.

10. Ostriches are recognized as one of the only environmentally friendly animals in the world.

The Ostrich Egg

  1. An Ostrich will lay 5 to 20 eggs at a time and will continue to lay for as long as 25 years.

  2. An ostrich hen can lay 40 to 100 eggs per year. The hen sits on the eggs by day and the male sits on the eggs at night.

  3. We order all the eggs we use for painting from ostrich farms.  The farms sell eggs that are infertile, so, no little chicks are ever killed

        for our artwork.
